New Orleans Society: Les Pierrettes goes through the looking - glasspeony

Wednesday evening, Les Pierrettes dedicated the organization's annual ball to Pierrot, the French master of pantomime. Held at the Sheraton Hotel, this year's ball had as its theme "Les Pierrettes Goes Through the Looking Glass."


  

Promptly at 8:30 p.m., Jimmy Maxwell and his orchestra began to play. A whistle blew, heralding the appearance of this year's captains, Misses Margaret Coco Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Conner Ellis III, and Elizabeth Ashland Hines, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hugh Hines. Miss Ellis portrayed the Queen of Spades and Miss Hines portrayed the Queen of Hearts in coordinating costumes of black and red. With the help of their lieutenants, the captains led a group of 22 dancers, each dressed as Alice in Wonderland, in performing "It's a Very Unhappy Birthday" and "I'm Late" from the Broadway musical "Alice in Wonderland."


  

The lieutenants then positioned themselves at the foot of a gold and silver throne, where their monarch, Miss Kelly Wright Swanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Richard Swanson, and her royal entourage held court.

In keeping with tradition, the pages presented white orchids to the queen's and captains' mothers. The pages presented bouquets of pink sweetheart roses to Miss Eleanor Reid Bergin, last year's queen, and to Miss Carroll Irene Gelderman, last year's captain.


  

The queen's supper immediately followed the ball and took place in the hotel's Armstrong Ballroom.
